Seeking the Reasons
for Your Restless Nights

Sleep study room
Our sleep study rooms were renovated to look and feel like hotel rooms, complete with comfortable queen-sized beds.
Do you have a sleep disorder? You may if you snore, wake up with headaches, are fatigued or remain very sleepy throughout the day. Or, perhaps your spouse has a disorder that's interfering with your own rest.

Manatee Memorial's Sleep Disorder Center is a four-bed sleep lab with technologically advanced Respironics digital equipment. Our sleep study rooms were renovated this year to look and feel more like hotel rooms than hospital rooms, featuring comfortable queen-sized beds.

The Center uses advanced methods to diagnose and treat sleep disorders, including MorpheusTM, a Web-based fully electronic medical record environment for sleep scoring and data management. Your physician can monitor your sleep study online.

Additional patient benefits include:

  • Flexible scheduling
  • Continental breakfast and shower
  • Wireless Internet access and cable

The lab is supervised by Jason Wittman. He's one of the only sleep professionals in the region registered as both a polysomnogram technologist and respiratory therapist. A group of physicians, including neurologists and pulmonologists who are trained in sleep medicine, interpret the studies.

"Results usually are available within 10 days, but sometimes we can provide treatment right away," Wittman says. "For example, if someone has severe sleep apnea and frequently stops breathing during the night, we can fit the patient with a continuous positive airway pressure [CPAP] mask that can help him or her breathe and sleep better immediately."

What's Stopping Your Sleep?

Even losing just a few hours of sleep every night can have a dramatic impact on memory, judgment and concentration over time. Lack of sleep also reduces the body's ability to process sugars and increases stress hormone levels, which can lead to more serious problems.

There are more than 80 sleep disorders, including:

  • Snoring
  • Sleep apnea
  • Daytime sleepiness, including hypersomnia and narcolepsy
  • Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
  • Parasomnias, including sleepwalking and night terrors
  • Insomnia
