Surgeons Use Robots to
Enhance Their Reach

Manatee Memorial Hospital continues to be a regional leader in providing advanced surgical care. The hospital is the only one in Manatee County with the da Vinci® Surgical System, a medical robot that enables surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions.

Additional Urological Procedures
Manatee Memorial has increased the number of urological procedures offered with the da Vinci system. Mark Weintraub, MD, urologic surgeon, performs kidney procedures, vasectomies and minimally invasive therapies for treating prostate disorders.

"The robot arms are an extension of the surgeon's own hands," Dr. Weintraub says. "In fact, the arms are even more flexible than human hands, allowing surgeons to maneuver in small spaces that might otherwise be inaccessible, thus avoiding damage to surrounding tissues."

Multiple Applications, Numerous Benefits
Stacey South, MD, the only gynecological oncologist in Manatee County, trained on the da Vinci system during her fellowship. She says Manatee Memorial's model is particularly easy to use. "Manatee also has a highly skilled surgical team of nurses and technicians who make sure each procedure runs smoothly," she says.

Surgeons at Manatee use da Vinci for a variety of procedures, including:

  • Endometrial and cervical cancer surgery
  • Early stage ovarian cancer surgery
  • Radical hysterectomy
  • Radical prostatectomy (removal of the prostate gland and surrounding tissues)
  • Nephrectomy (kidney removal)
Patients benefit in many ways. "Da Vinci allows us to make smaller incisions, which results in less scarring, blood loss and pain, as well as fewer complications," Dr. South says. "Patients leave the hospital faster — usually by the next day — and they recover more quickly than they would after open surgery or even traditional laparoscopic procedures."
