| ![]() Family BirthPlace Delivers Fresh Look The entire BirthPlace had a major
renovation in 2006 to add space and
let in plenty of natural light. The
project continues as we redecorate the
labor and delivery rooms to make
them even more warm and inviting.
"We'll be painting, putting in new
window treatments, cabinetry and other
accessories, installing softer lighting and
adding new flat-screen TVs," says
Debbie Mann, RN, Director of Women's
Services. "Our goal is to give the rooms
a contemporary yet restful look --
almost like a spa." The rooms will be
redecorated one at a time to avoid
disruptions in services, and the project is
expected to be completed by the end of
the year. All labor and delivery rooms
are equipped with advanced monitors
and other technology to help keep
mothers and babies safe.
The Family BirthPlace has been
welcoming mothers and new babies
since 1953. It is staffed with more than
50 labor and delivery nurses, some of
whom have more than 20 years of
experience. A woman in labor will
usually have the same nurse throughout
a 12-hour shift, providing an extra
measure of continuity and support.
Families also may draw reassurance
from the fact that Manatee Memorial
has Manatee County's only Level II
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),
which is staffed with specially trained
nurses and two neonatologists to care
for babies who are premature or are
born with respiratory difficulties or
other complications.
