MANATEE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Count on Us for Your Healthcare Needs

At Manatee Memorial Hospital, we're always growing and changing to keep pace with our community's needs. In this issue of Health News, you'll learn about two of the latest developments at the hospital.

The first is our new Pediatric Center, which we've designed to be kid-friendly in multiple ways. In addition to providing advanced medical care for children, the center offers amenities to help cheer and soothe them and their families, including spacious rooms, colorful murals and a playroom stocked with toys. We're especially proud of how the entire community came together to create the Center, with many local businesses and organizations donating funds, labor and ingenuity.

The Case Management department adopted the 28th Combat Troop of the Support Hospital in the International Green Zone in Baghdad, Iraq, and donated 20-plus boxes of essentials to the troops.
You'll also learn about the steps we're taking to treat heart attack victims even before they arrive in our emergency department. We've put a system in place to allow local paramedics to put our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory on the alert as soon as a heart attack is suspected. Patients can receive immediate treatment to open clogged arteries the moment they arrive at the hospital, greatly increasing the chances of survival and recovery.

We're also dedicated to keeping you informed about your own health. To that end, this issue provides tips on recognizing and preventing peripheral arterial disease, a narrowing of the arteries that carry blood to the legs, and new treatments that can save your limbs and your life. You'll also learn why and how to perform regular breast self-exams and what to do if you find a suspicious lump.

The nurses of the Orthopedic and Spinal Surgery Center earned the 2007 Nursing Unit of the Year award.
This issue reflects Manatee Memorial's dual goals of providing top-notch medical care and resources to keep our community healthy. We hope you enjoy the issue, and we thank you for your support and look forward to serving you.
