Patients who need colon surgery for benign or malignant tumors, chronic infections, digestive problems or other colon disorders may be eligible for laparoscopic surgery, a procedure that is less invasive than traditional open surgery.

David A. Napoliello, MD, a general surgeon who specializes in advanced minimally invasive surgery, was one of the first surgeons in the area to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic colon surgery at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.

"Minimally invasive laparoscopic colon surgery is an alternative for patients with conditions that affect the colon," Dr. Napoliello says. "It has been proven to be just as safe and effective as open surgery and is much easier on patients."

How Is Laparoscopic Surgery Different?
Surgeons performing traditional open surgery typically make a large 8- to 10-inch incision across the abdomen to gain access to the colon. This is a major surgery for patients, who often spend a week in the hospital after their procedures and face weeks of recovery.

During laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Napoliello makes several small one-half-inch incisions and one larger 2-inch incision in the abdomen. He then inserts a laparoscope, a small telescope equipped with the camera, into one of the smaller openings. The camera transmits magnified images of the surgical site to a monitor, allowing Dr. Napoliello to "see" inside the body.

He then places tiny surgical instruments through the other small openings and uses them to free the bowel. In some patients, Dr. Napoliello performs completely laparoscopic procedures. But he generally prefers to bring the unhealthy section of the colon through the larger incision and outside the body, where he can cut and remove the diseased tissue, reattach the healthy ends of the colon and return the colon to the abdomen. This technique gives him a direct view of the colon and allows him to perform more precise surgeries.

Advantage for Patients
"This procedure is a major advance for patients who need colon surgery," Dr. Napoliello says. "Patients usually feel less pain after surgery, spend fewer days in the hospital and recover more quickly. In addition, they have much smaller scars and their colon function returns to normal faster."

Dr. Napoliello is a highly trained and experienced laparoscopic surgeon. He completed a fellowship in advance laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He is a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
